Alpenglow
Signature:
Paper Type:
Just as a symphony can be broken down into many overlapping pure tones, so too can a landscape. To demonstrate this, a single function was created which was composed of many independent overlapping frequencies. High frequencies were then dampened as the function was both shifted downward and overlaid onto itself, creating an apparent transition from sharp crags to rolling foothills. A color palette was selected to resemble the phenomenon of alpenglow, which occurs when scattered light in the atmosphere illuminates the peaks of mountains, even when the sun is below the horizon.

Print Detail
- The following is a macro photo of a 16 x 24 inch artist proof on matte paper.
- Please note that these pictures are taken extremely close to the artwork to give a better feel for what it is like to in the presence of this piece.
- Most of our pieces are scale invariant, so small zoomed in regions can be hard to distinguish from the whole. We think this property gives the artwork a particular quality of bottomlessness.
Fine Art Papers
Canson® Infinity Rag Photographique 310 gsm, matte finish
(Shown Below, Left Print)
We chose this paper because it portrays our artwork with high color accuracy, minimal paper texture, and no glare.
A 100% cotton museum grade silvery-shimmering Fine Art inkjet paper with a specially formulated inkjet coating for Fine Art use. The natural white cotton paper contains no optical brighteners and has the characteristic Photo Rag® surface structure. Photo Rag® Metallic is acid and lignin-free and meets the most exacting requirements in terms of age resistance. Source
Hahnemühle Photo Rag® Metallic 340 gsm, high-gloss metallic finish
(Shown Below, Right Print)
We chose this paper because it plays with light in interesting ways, creating a lustering metallic surface, subtle texture, darker darks, and silvery lights that are different than any other metallic fine art paper on the market. Pictures do not do it justice!
A 100% cotton museum grade white Fine Art and photo paper. The exceptional smooth white tone is achieved during manufacturing by introducing natural minerals to the process. It has been developed to address the need for continued longevity requirements in the Digital Fine Art market. Source
Additional Information
Standard Prints:
- We sell smaller prints using standard photo printing processes and materials in an effort to make them more widely available and affordable.
Fine Art Prints:
- We focus on selling lower volume, high impact artwork of exceptional quality
- We work with an industry-leading fine art printing studio to ensure artwork is created to the most exacting standards
- All artwork is printed on color-calibrated wide format printers using custom printing profiles
- Every piece is produced with archival pigment inks and archival papers
- We personally and meticulously inspect, sign, number, package, and ship all of our products
- Artwork is rendered at a resolution of 16,000 x 24,000 pixels. This results in an image resolution of 400 pixels per inch (ppi) for a 40 x 60 print and significantly higher resolutions for smaller sizes. At these resolutions, we are limited more by the current state-of-the-art printing technology (and limits of human vision) than our rendering process.
- Our artwork shows off more detail the larger they are printed due to the extreme resolution of the original file.
- Rendered at higher than usual bit depth, resulting in more intricate detail and smoother gradients. Images use 16 bits per red / green / blue color channel, which results in 281 trillion potential colors.
Standard prints do not have a white margin (full bleed). Premium prints have a 1.5 inch paper margin around the perimeter.

- We may use artwork in marketing, promotional material, books, and small-format media.
- We may create 2 artist proofs (AP) at each size, as needed. These are required for print testing on multiple papers, photography, and event displays.
- Each size has its own numbering.

- Often in math and science, the concept of “up” is arbitrary. This is the case with our artwork too!
- We don’t want to force our interpretation upon you, so we let you choose the orientation in which your print is signed. It is all up to you.
- We sign prints in the paper margin just below the print.
- Please note that since Dan and Sean collaborate on the creation of artwork, they take turns signing everything. Dan signs work as DSBrennan and Sean signs work as SDBrennan. Hopefully that isn't too confusing.
- Please note that we do not drop ship artwork from a mass printing service. As a result, orders can take up to a week to be fulfilled.
- Please let us know ASAP if you need something expedited, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Email us at: support@AffineDesign.com
To minimize risk of damage, we sleeve prints in acid-free archival bags. We recommend that you keep your print in the bag until it is ready to be framed. When removing the print from the sleeve, we recommend that you:
- Ensure your hands are clean, lotion-free, and dry
- Use cotton gloves (if possible)
- Avoid rubbing or scraping the print area as the surface can be scuffed
- Have a clean, dry, flat place to unpackage the print
- Re-sleeve and reroll (if applicable) unframed prints when transporting
Your print will appear most vibrant when illuminated with a 90+ CRI (color rendering index) light source. Maximize the lifetime of your artwork by keeping it out of direct sunlight. Please do not get the print wet.
All of our artwork is generated with novel algorithms made by us and inspired by disciplines throughout multiple STEM fields. We may post additional detail about our algorithms on the Projects page and update this region accordingly.
