About Affine Design

Affine Design creates and sells artwork and designs based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). By showcasing STEM-based art and designs to the world, we hope to inspire others and foster future learning.

About the Owners

Affine Design is owned and operated by Sean Brennan and Dan Brennan.

Sean has nuclear and mechanical engineering degrees and multidisciplinary experience in the nuclear, oil, and aerospace industries. He has worked as a mechanical design engineer on warhead demilitarization plants, nuclear power plants, turbine engines, missile defense systems, deep-sea oil well equipment, and opto-mechanical systems for space observatories. He enjoys making anything from racing drones to mathematical art, and bothering Dan in true-to-brother form. Sean’s LinkedIn page can be found here

Dan has degrees in physics and optics, which have provided him with the tools required to study a wide range of topics, including avalanches, liquid crystals, topological insulators, and (primarily) optics. He currently works as an optical engineer, developing and operating high precision measurement systems for large aperture optics. Dan's interests include self-organized criticality, universality within dynamical systems, the emergence of human culture, the philosophy of science, and his wife and two children with whom he is madly in love. Find Dan's LinkedIn page here

Sean and Dan hope to leverage their education and experience to create beautiful and interesting forms of art that appeal to everyone. They are passionate about STEM and maker culture and want to inspire others to explore, learn, create, and advance.

Why are you named Affine Design?

We chose Affine Design because the word affine is a metaphor for intent.

The word affine generally describes a transformation where the angles and lengths of an object are modified while parallel relationships are maintained. You can find a typical example in picture editing software. Picture editing software uses affine transformations to rotate, scale, or skew a picture. You can find another example in the fractal known as Barnsley's fern. Each leaf is an affine transformation of the overall structure.

At Affine Design, we intend to showcase science, technology, engineering, and math concepts while transforming them into beautiful artwork and designs. Affine Design also sounds like “A Fine Design” (and who doesn’t like a Dad pun?).
